Student Enrolment In Foreign Universities Down By 10%: Centre
The Outbound Students' Traffic To USA Has Dropped By 50%
New Delhi: The outbound student traffic for higher education has come down by about 10 per cent, the Parliament was informed on Friday.
The number of students who went abroad for higher studies in 2018-19 was 6.20 lakh, but 9.44 per cent less than the previous years, Minister of Human Resource and Development Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said.
He said that as against 6,84,823 students who registered for higher studies abroad in 2016-17, the number came down to 6,20,156 in 2018-19. He said this in a written reply in Rajya Sabha.
Of the total number of students who enrolled in foreign universities, 1,72,600 went to Canada, 14,000 to Philippines and 15,600 went to Russia.
Significantly, the Minister informed that there has been a major drop in the number of Indian students enrolling for higher studies in the USA. In 2016 and 2017, more than 4 lakh candidates went to the USA, but the number has come down sharply and stands at only 2 lakh enrollment at present.
Russia, Armenia, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Hong Kong, among others, benefitted from the declining students’ traffic to the USA, the Minister’s reply said.
