Tamil Nadu Govt Introduces Board Exams In Class V and VIII
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Government has decided to introduce board exams in class V and class VIII from the ongoing academic session.
The key takeaways:
1. As per a notification issued by the State government, students who fail in the examination can take a retest two months after the declaration of the results. However, schools can detain a student if they fail the retest.
2. Some media reports said that communications will be issued to the schools not to fail the students until 2021-22.
3. With the introduction of the new system, the government has done away with the no-detention policy till class VIII. The Parliament had passed an amendment to the RTE Act in 2018, introducing the no-detention policy in classes. The State Government’s move followed the suggestion made by the draft national education policy.
4. According to a circular issued in February to all district education offices, the question paper for these exams will be common across schools in Tamil Nadu. As of now, schools following the Samacheer Kalvi syllabus in the State have the liberty of setting question papers till class 9 within the school itself.
5. While private schools have supported the government’s move, some educationists were quoted by the media as saying the decision will be detrimental to the interest of the students.
6. A senior teacher told the New Indian Express that the decision has been taken keeping city-based students in mind. “Parents who send their children to government schools are largely daily wage-workers who do not have enough literacy or knowledge to assist their wards with learning. Even today many schools in the state are single-teachers schools. This decision will definitely force many students to drop out,” he said.
