Telangana Makes Telugu Compulsory Subject In All Schools
The new order will be applicable from academic year 2025-26 for class 9 students and from year 2026-27 for class 10 students.
HYDERABAD: The Telangana government has made Telugu language a compulsory subject in all CBSE, ICSE, IB and regional board schools in the state.
This step has been taken under New Education Policy 2020 (NEP) under which it has become compulsory to give priority to regional languages for learning in primary classes.
A government order dated February 25 issued by School Education Department said that the syllabus for Telugu will change from the 2025-26 academic year. The order mentioned the replacement of ‘Singidi’ (Standard Telugu) with ‘Vennela’ (Simple Telugu) for Class 9 from 2025-26 academic year and for Class 10 from 2026-27.
It was said that teaching Telugu should be compulsory in CBSE, ICSE and IB schools too as per the Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools) Act, 2018.

‘Singidi’ is a Telugu textbook studied in schools, and ‘Vennela Telugu’ is a more elementary version intended to simplify learning the language and bring it closer to students. It is an initiative to enhance the teaching of the Telugu language in different school boards in Telangana, the government said.
The decision was taken close on the heels of Tamil Nadu resisting the implementation of the NEP 2020, which mandates a three-language formula.
According to NEP norms, schools are required to impart the regional or local language, English as a second language, and a third Indian language, ideally Hindi, in non-Hindi-speaking states.
