These Institutes Will Be Exempted From UGC Inspections; Know Why

New Delhi: IIT Madras, Banaras Hindu University, IIT Kharagpur, University of Delhi and University of Hyderabad have been officially accorded the Institute of Excellence (IoE) status by the Government on September 4.

The UGC had on August 2 finalised the list of 10 public and a matching number of private institutes for being accorded the IoE status after years of deliberation. The IoE tag is an initiative of the Narendra Modi to transform the selected 20 institutes into world-class universities.

According to a government statement, letter of intent has also been issued to five private universities for accepting and sending their preparedness for being declared as IoE. These institutions will need to submit their readiness for commencing academic operations as IoEs.

They are: 
Amrita Viswavidyapeetham, Tamil Nadu
Vellore Institute of Technology, Tamil Nadu
Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi
Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Bhubaneswar Odisha
Bharti Institute, Satya Bharti Foundation, Mohali, Haryana.

The statement said latter have also been issued to the Uttar Pradesh and Haryana governments to pass legislation in the respective State Assemblies to cease the status of Shiv Nadar University and O.P Jindal University as private universities under the State to enable them to be considered as IoE Deemed Universities.

Benefits of Enjoying IoE Tag:

1. Government Institutions to get additional funding up to 1000 Crore
2. The selected Institutions under IoE shall have complete academic and administrative autonomy
3.UGC Inspection shall not apply to Institutions of Eminence
4. The Institutions of Eminence will have complete financial autonomy to spend the resources raised and allocated
5. Academic collaborations with foreign higher educational institutions (in top 500) would be exempted from government approvals
6.Freedom to recruit faculty from outside India
7.Freedom to enter into academic collaborations with other Institutions within the country
8.Freedom to have own transparent merit-based system for admission of students
9.Freedom to fix and charge fees from foreign students without restriction
10. Flexibility in fixing of curriculum and syllabus, with no UGC mandated curriculum structure
