Third Attempt Criteria For JEE-Advanced 2025 Withdrawn, Students Can Write Test Twice

Students who have passed Class 12 board exams in 2023 will not be allowed to appear for the exam

HYDERABAD: In a key change to the eligibility criteria for the JEE-Advanced 2025 examination, the IIT Kanpur which conducts the exam, has reversed its earlier decision to allow candidates three attempts and brought the number of attempts to two.

Now, the students can appear for the JEE Advanced Exam twice instead of three attempts.

“The Joint Admission Board (JAB) has decided to restore the earlier eligibility criterion used in previous years pertaining to number of attempts in JEE (Advanced), in supersession of the criterion mentioned in Press Release dated November 05, 2024. This has been done after considering various competing requirements in the meeting of JAB held on November 15, 2024. This has resulted in restoring the earlier eligibility criteria followed since 2013. All other eligibility criteria remain same,” a notice issued by the IIT Kanpur said.

Earlier this year, IIT Kanpur modified the eligibility criteria, increasing the number of attempts to three. This change was welcomed by many students, particularly those who were hoping for another chance to write the test.

However, after a meeting of the Joint Admission Board (JAB), the decision was reversed.

As a result, students who passed their Class 12 board exams in 2023 will no longer be eligible to appear for the exam, a provision that had previously been extended under the new rule.

Students disappointed

The decision has left thousands of candidates disappointed, especially those who started preparing after the announcement of a third attempt.

One of the key reasons cited for the reversal is the concern that offering three attempts might encourage students to push for a permanent increase in the number of opportunities in the future. To prevent this, the authorities decided to revert to the original two-attempt policy.

The decision had a direct impact on coaching centres who saw a substantial rise in the students after the third attempt criterion was announced.
