Bhubaneswar: With the pandemic raging, the entire education system in 2020-21 and the ensuing academic year have been completely derailed. The Joint Entrance Examinations (JEE) have been repeatedly rescheduled while board exams were cancelled thanks to the rising cases of COVID-19 across the country.
JEE Main is conducted four times a year – in February, March, April and May. However, the April session was eventually held in July and the May session is set to be conducted from August 26-September 2.
Interestingly, it has been noticed that meritorious students are reappearing for the entrance exam in various sessions. One Pravar Kataria scored 100 percentile in the JEE (Main) in February this year, but the again reappeared for the April session. By the way, Pravar topped again.
The question arises why he attempted the exam again despite scoring 100 percentile. He did so to “beat the pandemic blues” and to “brush up on concepts for JEE Advanced”, reported The Indian Express.
Another meritorious student, Kavya Chopra had got 99.98 percentile in the February session but again took the exam in March just to “set up a personal benchmark”. Kavya scored a perfect 300/300, becoming the first girl to do so.
Experts say those who scored more than 95 percentile are already eligible for JEE-Advanced and they shouldn’t focus on JEE Main anymore.
According to FIITJEE expert Ramesh Batlish, multiple attempts are for those students who wish to improve their score/rank in JEE Main. “Students who are not sure of a preferred choice of seat in the IITs are considering multiple attempts of JEE Main this year as a backup option for the NITs/IIITs & GFTIs,” Batlish was quoted as saying by the IE.
Andhra Pradesh’s S Harsha Varma has scored 99.99 percentile consistently in all the three JEE Main attempts in 2021. Varma is contemplating another attempt for the “sake of a perfect score” but is focussing on JEE Advanced.
“If a student has got a rank under 500 in JEE Main but above 8,000 in Advanced, such aspirants will have better chances to secure a seat in their preferred course in NIT. Therefore, they keep trying to improve their rank in Main,” national academics director of the Aakash Institute, Ajay Kumar Sharma was quoted as saying by the publication.
For the record, six students had scored 100 percentile in the February session. The figure leapt to 13 in the March session and 17 in the April session.
