Kolkata: With no opportunity for classroom teachings, the majority of the country’s students shifted to the online mode to continue education. At the same time, a large chunk of underprivileged students failed to keep up with the system thanks to their financial conditions.
Given the current scenario, a traffic policeman has come forward with a helping hand for the underprivileged children of Madhu Basti, a slum near Majerhat Railway Station in Kolkata, reported ABP Education. These students neither have the opportunity to attend online classes, nor their parents can afford to send them for private tuition.
The south west traffic guard, led by the officer-in-charge (OC) Prasenjit Chatterjee, has dedicated two hours in the evening for interactive tuitions for these children.
The idea dawned when the OC spotted few children studying on a rickshaw in the evening while patrolling the area. Chatterjee then decided to hold classes for those children and sought help from his colleagues in the south west traffic guard.
The classes began on August 12 with only a table with a whiteboard and marker pens.
“Those children are really poor. They took shelter under a plastic cover. We are just trying to help them. This small initiative is nothing but a humanitarian gesture,” Chatterjee was quoted as saying by ABP Education.
“Civic volunteers are giving those kids classes as per their syllabus. Around 30 children up to Class IV are being taught Hindi, English, Maths. We got a great response from the children over there. We will try to continue the classes until their schools reopen,” the OC added.
