New Delhi: The United Kingdom has reported a sharp 16% drop in sponsored study visa applications in the year ending August 2026, according to the UK Home Department. A total of 360,700 main applicants were recorded, alongside a 22% fall in dependent applications.
This decline follows new rules that restrict international students from bringing dependents, except in limited cases such as PhD and research programs. Education experts warn the numbers highlight the volatility of the global student market.
For Indian students, long drawn to the UK’s prestige, the new data shows growing hesitation. Many now look to Canada, Australia, Germany, and Ireland, citing affordability, family rights, and post-study work visas as decisive factors.
“The UK was always seen as prestigious, but the restrictions on dependents and rising costs make it less appealing. Canada feels more welcoming, especially with its strong post-study work opportunities,” said Riya Sharma, an MBA aspirant from New Delhi.
Germany has emerged as a strong alternative. Its low tuition fees, focus on research, and clear PR pathways attract engineering and STEM students. “I was preparing for UK universities, but now Germany looks better. The tuition fees are lower, and the focus on research is exactly what I want for my career,” noted Arjun Mehta from Bangalore.
Australia and Ireland are also gaining traction. Students value their balance of lifestyle, work rights, and family inclusion. “Australia and Ireland are gaining popularity among my peers. The UK’s policies seem unpredictable, and when we are investing so much in our education, stability matters,” said Sneha Banerjee, an IELTS candidate from Kolkata.
