New Delhi: Notwithstanding the suggestions from some academicians and education boards, the Centre on Monday said it was not possible to implement a uniform education syllabus across the country.
Replying to a question in Lok Sabha, Minister of Human Resource and Development Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said that since education as a subject falls under the concurrent list, the states are well within their rights to decide on their syllabus and curriculum.
“The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERTs) and State Education Boards either adopt or adapt NCERT’s model syllabi and textbooks or develop their own syllabi and textbooks based on National Curriculum Framework so as to suit the state-specific needs,” he said during the Question Hour.
The Minister’s observation comes against the backdrop of several experts demanding a uniform syllabus across the country to maintain uniformity across all level of education. Some education bodies have, in particular, suggested that the Science curriculum should be the same across the boards to help students compete with confidence with the rest at the national level in various entrance examinations.
