Union Budget 2021: Education Allocated ₹93,224 Crore; Slashed By 6%

New Delhi: Centre has allocated ₹93,224.31 crore to the Ministry of Education in the Union Budget 2021-22 on Monday. The amount is ₹8,100 crore more than the revised estimates for the current fiscal. The total education budget though was slashed by 6 per cent from Rs 99,311 crore in 2020-21 to Rs 93,224 crore in 2021-22 — the lowest in three years.

The Ministry’s allocation was ₹99,311.52 crore for 2020-21 fiscal, which was later revised to ₹85,089.07 crore. This revision came after coronavirus pandemic hit the country and classes were closed to prevent the spread of the virus, reported news agency PTI.

The Department of School Education has got ₹54,873.66 crore as against ₹59,845 crore allocated in the last Union Budget, a drop of ₹4971.34 crore.

Also, the ministry’s school education scheme Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan saw a reduced allocation of ₹31,050.16 crore as compared to 38,750.50 crore in the current fiscal.

The Kendriya Vidyalayas funds, however, have been raised from ₹5,516 crore to ₹6,800 crore.

Navodaya Vidyalayas’ budget allocation has been increased by ₹500 crore. A sum of ₹3,300 crore was allocated to Navodaya Vidyalayas this fiscal, which has been increased to ₹3,800 crore for 2021-22 fiscal.
