Union Budget 2025: Allocation For Higher Education Goes Up By ₹2,400 crore
The government has increased the allocation for 2025-26 fiscal year to ₹50077.95 crore from ₹47619.77 crore for the 2024-25 financial year.
NEW DELHI: The Central government has allocated ₹50077.95 crore to the Department of Higher Education under Ministry of Education for the 2025-26 financial year compared to ₹47619.77 crore allocated for the 2024-25 financial year, a 7.74% rise.
This includes ₹2160 crore for student financial aid for the next financial year. The Union government plans to spend ₹681 crore on digital India e-learning initiative.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the Union Budget 2025 on February 1.

Allocation for Research and Innovation stands at ₹327 crore.
A sum of ₹11349 crore has been allocated to IITs, the budget document says. Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) have been allocated ₹522.20 crore, up from ₹515.91 crore allocated in 2024-25 fiscal year.
The budget for the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) witnessed a decrease of ₹18.27 crore. A sum of ₹900 crore has been allocated for 2025-26 FY when compared to ₹918.27 crore in 2024-25 financial year.
The allocation for University Grants Commission (UGC) has seen a rise to ₹3335.97 crore from ₹2500. However, the budget for the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has decreased to ₹200 crore from ₹400 crore.
The Union Budget has proposed an allocation of ₹251.89 crore to Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), when compared to ₹212.21 crore.
Allocations for the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) have increased to ₹5473.87 from ₹4839.40 in 2024-25 FY.
Central sector schemes and projects, which include National Research Professors, World Class Institutions, Prime Minister’s Girls’ Hostel, and Indian Knowledge Systems, and Glue Grant for Higher Education Institutes, has been allocated ₹528.36 crore for FY 2025-26.
For the second consecutive time, Central University, Andhra Pradesh and Tribal Universities in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have not got any grant.
The outlay for other central sector schemes —Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching, Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme (MMTTP), Global Initiative for Academic Network (GIAN), National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS), National Institutional Ranking Framework, Study in India, Centres of Excellence (CoE) in Artificial Intelligence (AI), ASEAN Fellowship, and Champion Services Sector Scheme stands at ₹5175.88 crore.
