Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh on Monday announced making rural service mandatory for MBBS graduate.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, speaking at an event, said the passing out MBBS students from the government medical colleges will have to serve two years in rural areas. However, the rule will not be applicable to those opting for specialisation or going abroad.
In case of MD or MS degree holders, one year rural posting will be mandatory.
According to news reports, the CM said that the medical students will have to sign bonds to fulfil the rural stint. The move, he said, is being initiated to improve the quality of healthcare services in rural areas.
Uttar Pradesh, however, is not alone in implementing such measures. Several states have made rural stints mandatory for doctors through various options.
Recently, the Maharashtra government has proposed a plan of reserving 10 per cent MBBS and 20 per cent PG seats for doctors who are willing to take up rural stints for five to seven years.
