In an interaction with the Education Bytes, Prof Anand Achari, Principal of Mumbai-based Vivekanand Education Society’s College of Architecture said that the future of students pursuing architectural engineering is bright as more sectors hire professionals to design aesthetically appealing workspaces. He also said that technology is playing an increasingly larger role in architecture field.
Excerpts of the interview:
What are the career options for students pursuing an architecture course?
Architecture offers diverse career paths beyond traditional building design. Graduates can become architects, urban planners, interior designers, and landscape architects. Most architects choose to explore niche areas of study such as environmental design, restoration, and heritage conservation. Today, the growing emphasis on sustainability has opened avenues for architects to choose areas pertaining to green building design, energy-efficient structures, and eco-friendly urban planning. Architecture graduates can also explore careers in construction management, project management, and even product design. Additionally, opportunities in academia, research, and urban policy roles in the government are also prominent career options for architects. The evolving architecture landscape ensures students have ample choices to match their interests to their skills.
This year, the Union Budget continues to lay emphasis on the infra and construction sectors. Do you think higher infra layout bodes well for career opportunities for architects?
Absolutely. The Union Budget’s focus on infrastructure development directly translates into increased demand for architects. Large-scale projects in urban development, smart cities, transportation networks, and public utilities need architectural expertise to ensure sustainable and efficient designs. As the cost of infrastructure increases, architects will have to play a key role in conceptualizing and executing innovative solutions for housing, commercial spaces, and civic infrastructure. The rise of eco-friendly practices in construction also offers a wide range of opportunities for architects focused on green building and sustainable design.
Which sectors have emerged as major recruiters for architecture students apart from traditional real estate, construction, and infra sectors?
In addition to traditional sectors such as real estate and construction, students of architecture find themselves being placed at other relatively competitive areas of expertise such as the “hospitality industry”, where architects are required to design hotels, resorts, and event spaces, “IT companies”, where architects are recruited to create innovative workspaces. In addition, sectors such as healthcare, retail, and entertainment are in constant requirement for specialized designs for hospitals, shopping malls, and entertainment complexes, respectively. Emerging areas of study such as sustainable architecture and smart city planning are today recruiting architects and designers allowing for creation of a diverse job market for our budding students of architecture.
How is technology being leveraged in architectural science?
In today’s technology driven world the need to be well-placed on a digital platform is revolutionizing architectural science. Tools like Building Information Modelling (BIM) allow architects to visualize, simulate, and manage building designs in a more integrated manner. Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) offer immersive experiences to clients, letting them “walk through” designs before beginning construction. 3D printing and parametric design are also helping architects to create complex and customized designs with precision and efficiency. Technology also plays a key role in sustainability, enabling architects to design energy-efficient buildings with smart systems for energy monitoring and climate control.
What are the major challenges in integrating sustainable practices into architecture and design? How do you address these challenges through your work and research?
Yes, at VESCOA, we emphasize on equipping our students with latest technologies. As part of the requirements, we have integrated Building Information Modelling (BIM) into our academic curriculum, allowing students to experience modern architectural designs and construction techniques, hands-on. Our well-equipped lab is used for conducting workshops on 3D printing and parametric design, exposing them to cutting-edge design capabilities. We also offer courses in sustainable architecture that focus on smart technologies, enabling students to design eco-friendly and energy-efficient buildings. These efforts ensure that our graduates are well-versed in both current and emerging technologies.
VESCOA is making a significant investment in upgrading its labs and research facilities with a resolute commitment to providing architecture students with an innovative and enriching learning experience. These enhancements include a “3D printer” that allows students to transform their design concepts into tangible models, a “Laser Cutting Machine”, for precise and intricate model making, “woodcarving tools” to enable students to hone their craftsmanship by crafting detailed architectural models. In addition our computer lab, a “Depth Sensing Motion Controller” promotes interactive design procedures, creating a dynamic and engaging environment. VESCOA’s substantial investment in these resources ensures that students have access to cutting-edge tools, maximizing their inner potential.
How do you see the role of technology evolving in the field of architecture and environmental sustainability?
Advancement in technology has been game-changer in the field of architecture, particularly when it comes to sustainability. With advancements in Building Information Modelling (BIM), architects can now design buildings that optimize the use of energy, efficiently manage resources, and reduce waste. Smart technologies, such as AI-powered sensors, help monitor energy consumption and adapt systems in real-time for maximum efficiency. 3D printing and prefabrication are also revolutionizing the construction process, allowing for more sustainable and resource-efficient building methods. The future of architecture lies in integrating these technologies with sustainable design principles to create buildings that are both intelligent and environmentally responsible.
At VESCOA, we organized a National-level Online Training Programme, until the 23rd of April, 2023, on “Parametric Tools and Computational Design in Architecture” under the aegis of the Council of Architecture’s Training Research Centre (COA-TRC) in Bhopal. This program, divided into eight modules, provided hands-on training in Rhinoceros 3D and its plugins, offering students and professionals a chance to explore parametric design, its real-world applications, and implementation challenges with insights from industry experts.
How have placements for your students been in recent years? Do you hope to see better placement opportunities for your students this year and beyond?
Placements for our students have been consistently strong, with many securing positions in top architecture firms, design consultancies, and urban planning agencies. Given the rise in infrastructure projects and the growing focus on sustainability, we are optimistic that placement opportunities will only improve in the coming years. Our industry collaborations and dedicated placement cell ensure that students are exposed to a wide range of opportunities.
What will be your advice to aspirants who want to pursue a career in architecture?
My advice to aspiring architects is to be curious and open-minded. Architecture is not just about designing buildings; it’s about solving problems and improving people’s lives through thoughtful design. Students must be willing to explore diverse fields like urban planning, sustainability, and technology, as these areas are shaping the future of architecture. They must stay updated on new trends, materials, and design philosophies. It is necessary to gain practical experience, by engaging themselves in internships and projects at top architecture and design firms. Lastly, students of architecture must never lose sight of the social and environmental impact of your designs.
