West Bengal To Provide Free Eye Check-Up, Glasses For Govt School Students

Kolkata: The West Bengal government will provide free eye check-up and 6.25 lakh free glasses to over 4 lakh school students in the state. The scheme is for students from economically weak families in West Bengal.

The project ‘Chokher Alo’ was announced by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday, January 4. “Free eye examination will be offered to students of government schools and free glasses will be provided, if required,” Mamata said, adding that the project will be launched in phases from January 5.

The eye examination for children will be offered by Anganwari centre while the eye testing for all will be implemented by 2025.

Earlier, the chief minister had announced free tabs/smartphones for 9.5 lakh students in government schools and 14,000 government-aided schools along with 636 madrasas in the state.

The chief minister’s announcement came at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Birth Centenary Committee meeting which she attended virtually from state secretariat Nabanna.
