BHUBANESWAR: AS many as 136 BS-MS students of the Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISER) Berhampur were awarded BS-MS dual degree at its fifth convocation organised on its Laudigam campus, 25-km from Berhampur, on August 9.
One MS Degree and 22 PhD students also received their degrees.
Jayshaan Baibhav from the Department of Biological Sciences was awarded the President’s Gold Medal for the best academic performance in the graduating class across all disciplines of the BS-MS Dual Degree programme.
Similarly, Subharthi Paul from the Department of Physical Sciences received the Director’s Gold Medal for an outstanding all-round achievement and leadership in the graduating class across all disciplines of the BS-MS programme.
Proficiency Silver medals were awarded to five students. including Jayshaan Baibhav, Laishram Librada (Department of Physical Sciences), Debanash Mohapatra (Department of Chemical Sciences), Veronica Gogoi (Department of Mathematical Sciences) and Brinta Banik (Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences). While Laishram Librada (Department of Physical Sciences) received the Durgadas Mohanty Memorial Gold Medal, Hanan Fathima (Department of Biological Sciences) received the Founder Director’s Gold Medal.
Speaking at the event, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan congratulated students and called upon them to contribute to India’s national priorities. He urged graduates to align with PM Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat and praised IISER Berhampur for emerging as a hub for research, innovation, and NEP 2020-inspired education.
Governor of Odisha Hari Babu Kambhampati inaugurated the state of the art ‘Central Advanced Instrumentation Facility’ at IISER Berhampur for cutting edge research in frontier areas of research.
The ceremony was held in presence of Prof Arvind Anant Natu Chairperson Board of Governors IISER Berhampur, Prof Ashok Kumar Ganguly Director and Chairperson Senate IISER Berhampur, Prof Prosenjit Mondal Dean Academic Affairs, Pradeep Kumar Ray Registrar Member of the Board of Governors and Finance Committee, senate, faculty, officers along with graduating students and their parents.
The 1st Convocation of IISER Berhampur was held on October 28, 2021 in which 45 students belonging to 2016 batch were awarded BS-MS dual degree. 62 BS-MS students belonging to 2017 batch were awarded BS-MS dual degree at the second convocation of IISER at the permanent campus on August 25, 2022. A total of 102 BS-MS students belonging to 2018 batch were awarded BS-MS dual degree at the third convocation of IISER at the permanent campus on July 21, 2023. A total of 117 BS-MS students including 116 belonging to the 2019 batch and one from 2018 batch at the fourth convocation on August 7, 2024.
Established in 2016, IISER Berhampur was later declared as the institute of National importance under NITSER Act 2007. On October 10, 2018 the Union Cabinet approved the DPR of IISER Berhampur. On December 17, 2018 the master plan of the campus was prepared. On December 24, 2018 Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the permanent campus. On September 5, 2019 IISER Berhampur performed the ground breaking ceremony.
