New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Ashwini Kumar Choubey on Friday said that presently there are 541 medical colleges across the nation with a capacity of 80,312 Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) seats.
“At present, there are 541 medical colleges (280 under government and 261 under private) in the country with an intake capacity of 80,312 MBBS seats annually,” Choubey said in his written reply in the Lok Sabha,
According to him, the number of medical colleges was 381 in 2014 and now it has increased to 541 while the number of medical seats has increased from 54,348 (in 2014) to 80,312 (in 2020).
Choubey said that 157 medical colleges have been approved under the union government’s new scheme and of those, 43 are already functional.
