New Delhi: The administration of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) alleged that a few students broke into the central library and clashed with the staff. According to news agency PTI, an FIR has been registered with the police.
The administration accused the students of occupying the library for the last two days. However, the students’ union, countered the administration claims and charged it for using criminal intimidation against students. The students demanded the withdrawal of the FIR and reopening of the library at the earliest.
Police said that the incident happened on June 8 and on the basis of the varsity’s chief security officer’s statements, a case was registered on Wednesday. “Based on the complaint, a case was registered under Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code, Delhi Disaster Management Act and prevention of damage to public property,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Ingit Pratap Singh was quoted as saying by the agency.
According to the cops, no arrests have been made in the case as yet. A meeting was also held between the students and the university’s chief librarian in this regard.
“This (incident) has caused health risk for the library staff and even other students residing in the hostels, since these unruly students return to hostel for lunch/dinner or other purposes,” the university said via a statement.
“A group of students scuffled with the security staff, broke open the side glass door of the B R Ambedkar Library, entered the main reading room of the building on June 8 and have occupied the space since then,” the varsity added.
