Are Foreign Universities Willing To Set Up Campuses In India? Here’s What Survey Reveals
New Delhi: Is India a preferred location to have a second campus for foreign institutions? The answer might be affirmative.
As many as eight overseas universities, including 2 from the top 100 of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021, seem interested in having an international campus here. Five of those varsities are from the United States and one each from Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom.
A survey, in which 43 internationally-ranked varsities took part, revealed that 16 of them are contemplating setting up a campus in India. They even claimed they would prefer students from India to start with to ensure sufficient enrolments and sustainability of their venture, reported The Times of India.
Central government-funded deemed to be university, the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), conducted the survey between December 21, 2020, and February 12, 2021. It sought responses from the top 200 universities of THE World University Rankings 2021 based on views on setting up India campuses. Three varsities from the ‘top 10’ responded.
“Foreign universities in the top category are interested in establishing their campuses in India, But most are adopting a wait and watch approach as the government rules are yet to be framed,” deputy adviser, Unit for International Cooperation, NIEPA, Eldho Mathews was quoted as saying by TOI.
Out of the 43 universities that took part in the survey, 14 are from the United Kingdom, 13 from the United States and six from Canada.
