New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE) recently shared some important lessons on the potential threats lurking on the internet.
The handbook on Cyber Safety has been supplied to all the schools for students from Class IX to Class XII. The handbook explains the guidelines to be followed by the students as well as the parents so that they understand the sensitivity of such issues, and ‘what to do’ and ‘what to avoid’ when doing anything online.
These include limiting friendship to acquaintances and strangers online, actions against ‘revenge pornography’, and valuing the consent of other people. Certain guidelines are also coming into review as well as precautions and awareness have also increased among the public since the Bois locker room controversy.
The COVID-19 pandemic-induced lockdown has also made people to resort to all sorts of activities such as work from home, educational classes and online exam.
“Students must learn to set limits to their online friendships as well as online communication with real-life friends. There has to be a limit to what they share or exchange in terms of written words, pictures or videos. Because they might not be able to control who actually sees it, breach of trust and harm to the reputation of the person,” a senior board official told Times Now.
The officer also shared a special note especially for the boys by saying that teenagers should understand the relation between the genders. Boys must treat girls on equal terms and respect them and their desires as that of human beings, not just as that of objects. “Consent must be an important part of relationships. Material shared in confidence should not be published on social media without the consent of the other person, just because the other person does not want to continue the relation anymore.” the officer said, adding that youngsters should understand that rejection doesn’t mean their lives have come to an end, it’s just a part of life.
“Students must be very cautious when their chat partner gives them many compliments in a very short duration of acquaintance. Avoid talking to people who ask you to share your explicit photographs or videos. Talking to strangers should also be avoided. As this should be known that anything shared with a person on the internet can be used by them to blackmail you.”
This handbook also teaches its readers how not to fall into the trap of revenge pornography.
