Class 8 Social Science Textbook Second Volume Will Feature Regional Movements, Says NCERT

NCERT issues clarification in response to concerns over the exclusion of various regional resistance movements from the new edition.

NEW DELHI: In response to the concerns over the exclusion of various regional resistance movements from the new edition from the recently released Class VIII Social Science textbook, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has issued a clarification.

In a clarification related to its new Class 8 social science textbook titled ‘Exploring Society: India and Beyond’, the NCERT has said that the textbook is the first volume and that the second volume containing the various regional resistance movement is in development stages.

The second volume of the book is expected to be released in between September and October 2025, the NCERT said.

This new volume will include chapters on movements such as the Paika Rebellion or Khurda Uprising of Odisha, the Kuka Movement of the Sikhs in Punjab, and other similar regional uprisings.

 

Recently days, the NCERT has introduced several new textbooks for Classes 5 and 8. Those include Malhar – Hindi Textbook (Class 8); Veena – Hindi Textbook (Class 5); Santoor – English Textbook (Class 5); Kriti – Art Textbook (Class 8); Poorvi – English Textbook (Class 8).

In the first volume of the book ‘Exploring Society: India and Beyond’, the NCERT has flagged episodes of brutality, temple destruction, and religious persecution during the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal periods.

Describing Babur as a “brutal and ruthless conqueror, slaughtering entire populations of cities”, Akbar’s reign as a “blend of brutality and tolerance”, and Aurangzeb who destroyed temples and gurdwaras, the NCERT’s new Class 8 Social Science textbook points to “many instances of religious intolerance” during the period.
