New Delhi: With voting underway in the Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) elections on Friday, the Delhi High Court has warned that it could stop the counting or postpone the results over incidents of student violence and vandalism.
The results are scheduled to be declared on Saturday.
Resuming its hearing on a petition on largescale violence by students in the run up to the polls, the court pulled up the university, Centre and Delhi Police for failing to control such incidents, stating it was “unacceptable at any cost” to allow the student polls to turn into the ruckus as reflected in the material placed before it.
Though the court did not stay the elections, it has ordered the university authorities and Delhi Police to file status reports on the action taken over the incidents. It further warned that it may stop the counting of votes and postpone results if it is not satisfied with the reports.
The court also banned victory processions in view of the violence during elections. The Bench said, “This (violence) is happening year after year, nothing has changed. A student slapping a teacher after winning—who can think of this? Victory should make you humble,” the court said, adding that it is issuing show-cause notices to individual candidates and notices to student organizations for collective damages.
