Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy announced that English will be the medium of teaching in government schools. A survey conducted by the state government revealed that 96.17 per cent parents want children to be taught in English at the primary level in government schools.
Earlier, the state High Court had canceled a government order that said Classes 1 to 6 would be taught in English across government schools. Two BJP leaders challenged the order stating it is the primary right of students and their parents to choose the medium of language.
The AP government then asked the opinions of parents and came out with a result that 17.85 lakh out 17.87 lakh parents of students studying in Class 1 to Class 6 prefer being taught in English while keeping Telugu as a mandatory subject.
Around 3.05 per cent preferred Telugu medium and 0.78 per cent chose other languages.
“The parents have decided to support the government’s decision of introducing English as the medium of instruction in schools. Earlier, the government has taken this decision to make every child in the state competent to meet global standards. The state government is keen on providing quality education for every child in the state and equip them with world-class knowledge,” a note from CMO said.
