First National Workshop: ‘Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming & Comic Sector Has Same Potential As IT Was In 2000s’

New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Information & Broadcasting on Tuesday organised the first National Workshop and Consultation on draft Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comic (AVGC) policies at Vigyan Bhawan for industry, academia and the government.

Inaugurating the workshop, I & B Ministry Secretary and AVGC Taskforce Chairman Apurva Chandra spoke about the ministry’s efforts to strengthen the AVGC sector in India and urged the states to also put in their best efforts to benefit from its growth.

Chandra pointed out multiple enablers of AVGC sector, with Education and Skilling being the core pillars.

He said that the AVGC sector has witnessed unprecedented growth rate in recent times and is expected to grow exponentially in the next decade.

Chandra stressed that it is imperative to give the right kind of exposure to our children at the right age so that they have an opportunity to hone their creative skills and make a career in this sector, for which the draft policy lays equal emphasis on skilling and education.

AVGC is today at a place where Indian IT sector was in 2000s, he observed. Just like IT sector has become a substantial contributor in the world, the same potential lies in AVGC sector, he added, noting that major Hollywood movies involve skill and manpower from India.

The main objective of the National Workshop was disseminating the Model State policy to the states for its customisation and adoption. It also provided a platform for discussions on the Draft National Policy to align it to the needs of its stakeholders.

There was a session on showcasing best practices being followed for promoting AVGC sector by certain states.
