Germany Tightens Visa Rules For Indian Students

By EB Bureau on September 29, 2026

Berlin / New Delhi: The German Federal Foreign Office, in collaboration with the Anabin database and the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) India, has announced sweeping changes to entry requirements for Indian students.

The overhaul introduces stricter academic thresholds, a new digital screening test for postgraduates, and higher financial solvency benchmarks to ensure smoother administration and student self‑sufficiency.

Academic Criteria Raised for Bachelor’s Applicants

From the Winter Semester 2026/2027, Indian high school graduates must secure a minimum 70% aggregate score in Class XII board examinations to qualify for German universities.

Eligible students can then pursue one of two pathways:

  • Preparatory Route: A one‑year foundation course at a Studienkolleg, followed by the compulsory Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) exam.
  • Direct Route: Completion of at least one academic year of a Bachelor’s programme at an Indian university recognised with H+ status on the Anabin portal, enabling subject‑restricted direct entry.

Postgraduate Screening via Digital Master Test (dMAT)

Beginning Summer Semester 2027, postgraduate applicants in high‑demand fields must clear the Digital Master Test (dMAT), a mandatory online evaluation costing €150.

  • Target Streams: Engineering, Commerce, Finance, and Business Management.
  • Exemptions: Students who completed APS registration before 29 June 2026, or those applying to non‑STEM/non‑business disciplines, remain exempt.

Financial Proof Threshold Increased

To reflect rising living costs across European student hubs, Germany has raised the annual financial requirement to €11,904 (approx. €992 per month).

Applicants must deposit this sum into a sanctioned blocked account (Sperrkonto) before scheduling their visa interview. This adjustment underscores Germany’s emphasis on ensuring international students can sustain themselves during their studies.

Policy Rationale

Officials say the reforms aim to streamline visa processing, uphold academic standards, and safeguard student welfare. By tightening entry filters and mandating financial solvency, Germany seeks to balance its open‑door education policy with practical safeguards for both institutions and students.
