In a striking example of technology aiding self‑study, Chhavi Sardana, a 23‑year‑old from Hisar’s Dogran Mohalla, secured the 5th rank in the Haryana Civil Services (HCS) examination by relying on ChatGPT and disciplined preparation rather than coaching institutes.

Chhavi, who scored 385.80 out of 675 marks, is the first in her family to achieve a government officer’s post. A BA LLB graduate from Patiala, she initially aspired to practise law but nurtured a parallel dream of joining the civil services. While pursuing her degree, she began preparing for the HCS exam through rigorous self‑study.

Her routine involved eight hours of study daily, starting early between 6 am and 7 am. She deliberately stayed away from social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, instead using ChatGPT to clarify concepts and gather information.

“Consistent preparation, effective time management, and dedication to my goal made the difference,” she said after the results were declared.

The HCS selection process saw around 60,000 candidates in the preliminary stage. The first exam was held in April, followed by the second in June, with interviews conducted in Panchkula from 3 to 8 October. Chhavi emerged among the top scorers in the final list.

She has also appeared for the Punjab Civil Services (PCS) and the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations, with results awaited.

Chhavi’s achievement underscores how AI tools like ChatGPT are reshaping exam preparation, offering accessible guidance to aspirants who choose self‑study over expensive coaching.
