How WhatsApp’s New Parental Controls Reshape Online Safety For Teen Students

Teen students using WhatsApp will now see tighter parental oversight as the messaging app introduces new parental controls designed to balance online safety with privacy.

The new controls are optional and can be set up by parents and teenagers together. WhatsApp said the features are aimed at helping parents support their teens’ online safety while keeping their personal conversations private.

Privacy Settings Under Parental Supervision

Parents can decide who sees their teenager’s profile photo and who can add them to WhatsApp groups. If teens later wish to change these settings, parental approval via a PIN may be required.

Alerts on Group Activity

Parents may opt to receive notifications when their child joins or leaves a group, or if a group grows significantly. Importantly, these alerts do not allow parents to read group chats, which remain protected by end‑to‑end encryption.

Controls for Status & Channels

Parents can manage how teens interact with WhatsApp channels and status updates. They can restrict which channels a teen follows, whether they can create a channel, and control whose status updates the teen can view or share.

Meta AI Restrictions

The new system extends to Meta AI, giving parents the choice between the standard 13+ setting or a stricter ‘limited content’ option for their teenager.

Private Chats Remain Protected

WhatsApp has clarified that parents cannot access their teenager’s private messages or calls, which remain fully encrypted. The rollout of these controls will be gradual, meaning not all families will see them immediately.
