New Delhi: The Ministry of Human Resource and Development will conduct monthly review meetings with all central universities to assess academic progress and whether the campuses were addressing students’ grievances.
News agency PTI in a report on Friday said that HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal will hold meetings with the university vice-chancellors every month. The universities will also present monthly report card and “will be held accountable for irregularities of any nature”.
The development follows the resignation of Allahabad University VC Ratan Lal Hangloo this week, who was accused of improper handling of a sexual harassment case. The female student had accused the VC of ignoring rules which mandate universities to set up a grievance redressal mechanism in the campuses.
“The Minister himself will conduct a monthly review of the functioning of all central universities. He will also meet the Vice Chancellors for the review. Accountability will be fixed for irregularities of any nature and strict action will be taken,” a senior Ministry official was quoted by PTI as saying.
There are 38 central universities in the country at present.
