IIT-Bombay Comes To Afghan Students’ Rescue; Know How
New Delhi: In view of the worsening situation in Afghanistan, the IIT-Bombay has offered assistance to Afghan students participating in online classes by allowing them to join the hostels.
Students from Afghanistan, who were studying at the IIT-Bombay and had gone home during the COVID-19 pandemic, were attending online classes from there.
As the situation in their country worsened, the students made a request to the IIT-Bombay authorities to allow them to stay in the hostel. The institute acceded to their request.
“We offered admission to quite a few students from Afghanistan in the masters program this year under scholarships from ICCR. Because of online instructions, they were participating in the class from home,” IIT-Bombay Director Subhasis Chaudhuri posted on Facebook announcing the decision.
“However, due to rapidly deteriorating conditions in their homeland, they wanted to come out of their country and join the hostels in the campus. Although we have approved their request to come to the campus as a special case, we are not sure how late it is for them to pursue their dreams. We hope that they are all safe and can join us soon,” Chaudhuri added.
IIT-Bombay has nine Afghan Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship holders in the current academic year with all pursuing the M-Tech programme and have been attending lectures online throughout the pandemic.
Following the US’ withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban took over the country on Sunday, August 15. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani fled Kabul as the Taliban took control of the capital and the Presidential Palace.
