IIT Hyderabad Start-Up, CERCI Collaborate To Work On Indigenous Battery Technology

New Delhi: PURE EV, an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad startup, and CSIR-Central Electro Chemical Research Institute (CECRI) will be collaborating to work on indigenising Lithium-Ion Battery (LIB) technology for electric vehicles, in support of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, reported NDTV.

As per the signed agreement, joint research on battery pack production, LIB cells validation and ensuring the suitability of developed Li-ion batteries for critical performance at standard operating procedure (SoP) conditions will be carried out by PURE EV and CERCI.

CSIR launched the ‘CSIR Innovation Centre for Next Generation Energy Storage Solutions (ICeNGESS)’ to tackle the market monopoly of lithium battery, aiming to produce batteries in 100 Megawatt (MW) scale.

NITI Aayog member Dr VK Saraswat spoke about the importance of collaborations between lithium cell manufacturing institutions and industry partners, emphasising on achieving “self-reliance” and development of “core competence” in lithium cells manufacturing, due to the rising use of electric vehicles in India for transportation.

Lauding the collaboration between PURE EV and CSIR-CERCI, Saraswat added that the collaboration will lead to important outcomes on areas like “Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) and Safety” critical for “mass scale commercialization of these cells.”
