IIT JAM 2027: Preparation Strategies & Exam-Day Guidelines

Bhubaneswar: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has officially opened the registration window for the Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) 2027 for admission to postgraduate programmes across 23 IITs.

The registration process will remain active until October 12, 2026. Candidates can apply online through the official portal, jam.iitkgp.ac.in (jam.iitkgp.ac.in), using the JAM Online Application Processing System (JOAPS).

The examination will be conducted on February 14, 2027, in two sessions, and results will be declared on March 18, 2027.

The JAM 2027 scores will be used for admission to 89 postgraduate programmes, covering more than 3,000 seats.

With just a few months for the scheduled exam on February 14, 2027, here’s a comprehensive guide to help students to prepare effectively and maximize their performance.

  • Go through the official JAM syllabus for your chosen subject.
  • Identify high-weightage topics from past years’ papers.
  1. Build a Study Plan
  • Allocate daily slots for theory, problem-solving, and revision.
  • Use the Pomodoro technique (25 minutes study + 5 minutes break) to maintain focus.
  1. Practice Previous Year Papers
  • Solve at least 5–7 years of past papers to understand question trends.
  • Attempt mock tests under timed conditions to simulate the exam environment.
  1. Strengthen Core Concepts
  • Focus on fundamentals rather than rote learning.
  • Use standard textbooks and IIT JAM preparation guides for clarity.
  1. Revise Smartly
  • Create concise notes and formula sheets for quick revision.
  • Dedicate the last month to revising and practicing rather than learning new topics.

Exam-Day Guidelines

  1. Arrive Early
  • Reach the exam center at least 30–45 minutes before reporting time.
  • Carry your admit card and valid photo ID.
  1. Manage Time Wisely
  • Divide time between sections based on your strengths.
  • Don’t get stuck on a single question; move ahead and return later if time permits.
  1. Stay Calm & Focused
  • Read instructions carefully before starting.
  • Begin with questions you are confident about to build momentum.
  1. Avoid Last-Minute Panic
  • Don’t attempt to learn new topics on exam day.

  1. Health & Wellbeing
  • Sleep well the night before.
  • Eat a light, balanced breakfast to stay energized.

Success in JAM is not just about hard work but smart preparation and calm execution. As IIT Kharagpur noted in its official release, JAM is a “gateway to advanced learning and research opportunities at IITs.” With the right strategy, students can unlock those opportunities.
