Chennai: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has announced the first close of its ambitious Unicorn Frontier Fund I, a deep tech venture capital fund targeting a corpus of Rs 600–1,000 crore.
The initiative, launched by IIT Madras Research Park in partnership with Unicorn India Ventures, aims to provide patient capital to early-stage startups in cutting-edge sectors such as robotics, space technology, defence, and semiconductors.
More than Rs150 crore has already been committed by alumni, underscoring strong community support for the institute’s innovation ecosystem. The fund is expected to back 24–30 companies, with a majority emerging from IIT Madras’ incubation and research programmes.
Focus on Deep Tech Growth
The fund will primarily invest in startups at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 3–4, where technologies have moved beyond basic research, but still require validation before commercialisation. Around 60% of the corpus will be deployed for portfolio building, while the remainder will be reserved for follow-on rounds.
Structured with a 10-year investment horizon and a possible two-year extension, the model offers longer gestation periods compared to conventional venture capital, aligning with the extended development cycles of deep tech ventures.
Alumni-Driven Capital
The fund was first conceptualised at Sangam 2025, IIT Madras’ annual alumni meet, as a dedicated vehicle to bridge research with commercialisation.
Prof V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, said the initiative would help startups transition from technology development to scalable businesses.
Prof Ashwin Mahalingam, Dean of Alumni and Corporate Relations, highlighted that alumni participation allows graduates to directly invest in the institute’s innovation pipeline.
With alumni contributions already crossing Rs 150 crore, the fund is set to position IIT Madras as a national hub for deep tech entrepreneurship, connecting intellectual property-led ventures with long-term capital.
