Jamia’s New Library Reopens Three Months After Police Crackdown

New Delhi: Three months after it was damaged in police action, Dr Zakir Hussain Library, the central library of Jamia Millia Islamia here, was reopened for students on Wednesday.

Popularly known as the new library, it was reopened after extensive renovation and is fully functional now, university PRO Ahmad Azeem was quoted as saying by the PTI.

The library has a seating capacity of nearly 800 and comprises of a reading hall, research floor, reference and periodical section and a well-equipped digital resource centre with 150 computers.

On being notified about the opening of the library, several students were seen heading towards it.  “The textbook and research sections of the library remain open till midnight and witness huge footfall,” the PRO said.

He further said that the three months period was utilised to migrate library management software to an open source software from a commercial one for more effective integration and discovery of resources. “Effort has been made to provide better facilities to students by installing LED lights and providing new and comfortable chairs. It is a matter of great satisfaction that despite the heavy odds, the library has been able to utilise its budgetary allocation completely and renew its subscription to electronic databases.”

The university had estimated the damages to its property due to the police action at Rs 2.66 crore.  Nearly 125 students were injured also injured in the incident on December 15.

The old library remains closed, the PTI report added.
