Coronavirus Scare: UGC Directs Colleges, Universities To Avoid Campus Gatherings

New Delhi: In the wake of Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and to contain the spread of the disease, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed universities and colleges to ensure that there are no large gatherings on the campuses.

UGC secretary Rajnish Jain stressed that hand and respiratory hygiene was very important to stay safe. One should cover the mouth with a tissue or handkerchief while coughing or sneezing, he added.

“With reference to the communications received from secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare, and joint secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Department regarding taking preventive measures to combat the threat of the novel coronavirus, a coordinated and collective effort in a mission mode is needed. Therefore, all universities and their affiliated colleges are requested to take necessary precautions and follow the advisory,” Jain was quoted as saying by the TOI.

The Commission has also asked the authorities of colleges and universities to ensure cleanliness and proper hygiene on the campus and in the classrooms. Doorknobs, switch boards and hand railings in the classrooms are to be cleansed properly every day, as per the UGC’s directive.
