Maharashtra To Set Up Oceanic Sciences University In Ratnagiri District

Konkan: The Maharashtra government will set up an oceanic sciences university in Konkan’s Ratnagiri district, the state department for Higher and Technical Education informed on Wednesday.

Once the Ocean Applied Sciences University (MOASU) comes up, it will provide employment to the local youth for services in fisheries, transportation and tourism sectors.

The government, which is aiming to utilize the 720km coastline of the state, has formed a four-member committee to provide ideas and recommendations.

The committee will be headed by Dr Sarang Kulkarni, chief instructor at Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation’s Indian Institute of Scuba Diving and Active Sports, Dr Narsingh Thakur, faculty at CSIR’s National Institute of Oceanography, Dr B B Chougale, faculty at Pune College of Pharmacy, and Dhanraj Mane, director of higher education, reported The Indian Express.

The committee has been asked to submit a report within three months, along with estimated funds and land required for the project.
