New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana said that the modern education system is more utilitarian in nature and ill-equipped to enhance the two essential qualities — moral and spiritual aspects — for the character building of students.
Justice Ramana said this while addressing the 40th Convocation of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning at Puttaparthi on Monday. “Unfortunately, the modern education system tends to focus only on the ‘utilitarian’ function of education. Such a system is not equipped to deal with the ‘moral’ or ‘spiritual’ function of education which builds the character of our students and allows them to develop a social consciousness and a sense of responsibility,” Justice Ramana was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
“True education is one which imbibes moral values and virtues of humility, discipline, selflessness, compassion, tolerance, forgiveness and mutual respect. Education must elevate students’ character and broaden their thinking,” he said.
He said that education must enable the students to make the right decision when faced with life’s complexities. “You will have to deal with people from different walks of life, that may occasionally challenge you. But be tolerant. Hold onto certain core values as you walk through this journey of life, and experience all the richness it can offer you,” The CJI said.
According to Justice Ramana, students would be able to live a fulfilling life if they do not get trapped in their own needs and wants. “Look towards your family, your neighbourhood, your village, community, and so on. If you start practising this, you will soon be living in a better world free of conflicts and violence,” he said.
