The Odisha Empowers the Chancellor to appoint interim VCs and fix their tenure to ensure continuity amid ongoing or soon-to-complete VC terms

BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, on Wednesday approved the promulgation of the Odisha Universities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025 to strengthen the Chancellor’s role in appointing Vice-Chancellors (V-Cs) of state public universities under the Odisha Universities Act, 1989.

“The government has taken a proactive step to ensure better academic atmosphere and administrative stability in State Universities by promulgating the Odisha Universities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025. Through this Ordinance, some minor amendments have been made to overcome day-to-day administrative problems,” an official release said.

The ordinance empowers the Chancellor to appoint interim VCs and fix their tenure to ensure continuity amid ongoing or soon-to-complete VC terms. It also corrects typographical errors in Sections 6(3)(iii) and 13-A(3).

The move is aimed at bolstering administrative stability and maintaining a robust academic atmosphere in state universities, it added.
