National Medical Commission: Members To Be Selected Tomorrow

New Delhi: The formal process to establish the National Medical Commission (NMC) will begin on Monday with the selection of members from the nominations sent by the state governments.

The members will be selected to the Medical Advisory Council under NMC, a larger body having representation from all the state governments and the state medical councils.

The members will be selected through a draw of lots and the media has been invited for the event to maintain transparency, news reports said.

Once the NMC is constituted, the Medical Council of India will cease to exist. The Indian Medical Council Act will stand abolished.

The Centre had earlier issued advertisements for filling up various posts in NMC, including for chairman, secretary and members.

The NMC Act, which was passed by the Parliament in August this year, seeks to bring major reforms in the healthcare sector in the country and in the field of medical education.

In September, the Centre had announced the conduct of national-level medical entrance test NEET for admission to all medical institutes in the country. With this announcement, admission to AIIMS will also be done through NEET.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Harsh Vardhan had said that regulation of tuition fee in medical colleges, one of the key objectives of NMC, will come into effect from the next academic session.

The NMC Act also proposes a common final year MBBS examination called the National Exit Test (NEXT), for admission to post-graduate medical courses and also for obtaining a licence to practice. As per news reports, this could take another three years for full-scale implementation.
