New Delhi: Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi has underscored the transformative role of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, stating that it places critical thinking, creativity, experiential learning and problem solving at the centre of India’s education system.
“The policy seeks to move education beyond traditional approaches and encourage students to develop skills that can be applied to real-world situations. The emphasis on critical thinking and creativity is part of NEP 2020’s broader focus on competency-based and learner-centred education,” Joshi said.
He highlighted the responsibility of educational institutions in fostering environments where students can experiment, innovate and develop problem-solving abilities, moving beyond rote learning and examination-driven outcomes.
Teacher Training & Classroom Reforms
Implementation of NEP 2020 places greater demands on teachers and institutions to adopt learner-centred practices.
To support this, the government has launched a six-month Certificate (Bridge) Course in Primary Teacher Education through the National Institute of Open Schooling, aimed at strengthening child-centred and development-appropriate teaching methods.

Joshi emphasised that teachers play a pivotal role in helping students transition from information acquisition to deeper understanding and competency development.
The ministry continues to push reforms across schools and higher education, with recent reviews focusing on foundational learning and classroom innovation as part of NEP 2020’s nationwide rollout.
