Nine Detained After Student Groups Clash Over Campus Polls In Odisha’s Khallikote University

Student union elections are set to return to the higher educational institutions in Odisha after an eight-year hiatus.

BRAHMAPUR: A clash between two groups of students after the announcement of the union elections triggered tension on the Khallikote Unitary University (KUU) campus in Odisha’s Brahmapur on Monday.

Nine persons were detained and police personnel were deployed on the campus after the incident.

According to sources, the incident took place after the notification for the student union election was announced on the campus.

Following the announcement, sweets were distributed and students were in a jubilant mood.

Preliminary investigation revealed that students were discussing the upcoming campus polls with their supporters when an argument broke out over the issue.

Students from one group allegedly attacked a student of another group with a lathi, escalating tension on campus.

A police team rushed to the campus and stepped up the security to prevent untoward incident.

Brahmapur Superintendent of Police Abhinav Sonkar warned of strict legal action against anyone involved in violence, threats, unlawful assembly or other illegal activities. Students were urged to maintain peace and exercise restraint.
