New Delhi: For the first time, students from arts and commerce backgrounds have been allowed to register for an undergraduate course at the IIT-Delhi. The Department of Design of the IIT-Delhi will offer the BDes course, which was first offered in 2017.
There will be 20 seats for the four-year course to start with and it will be open to students of all specialisations (Science, Arts, Commerce etc.).
The admission to the BDes programme will be based on UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design) ranks. The institute has already begun the registration for the UCEED examination on uceed.iitb.ac.in.
“We are delighted about starting of this new Bachelor’s programme in design as this is the first time IIT Delhi would be admitting undergraduate students (B.Des) from other than Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. We expect that the students who graduate with a B. Des. degree from IIT Delhi would take up leadership positions in industry, academia, government, consulting, and entrepreneurship over a period of time,” IIT-Delhi director, Prof V. Ramgopal Rao was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
“The programme is designed for imparting high quality education to produce industry-ready and socially conscious design professionals for addressing some of the grand challenges facing our society/country,” IIT-Delhi, Head of Department of Design, Prof. PV Madhusudhan Rao said.
