Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: The Centre is learnt to have made provision of reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) students in admissions to Kendriya Vidyalaya and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.
News agency ANI reported on Wednesday evening that the Ministry of Human Resource and Development has given its nod to the proposal.
The decision, with likely political ramifications, was reportedly taken after a discussion with the Social Justice and Law ministries along with the OBC Commission, sources said. It will be implemented from the next academic session.
There are over 1,200 Kendriya Vidyalayas and about 600 Navodaya Vidyalayas in India.
Till date, only SC/ST students were given reservations in these schools.
According to KV manuals, 15 per cent of fresh admissions are reserved for SC students, 7.5 per cent for ST students and 3% for differently-abled children
The HRD Ministry has not released any official communication yet. This story will be updated as and when it issues a statement.
