Bhubaneswar: Parliament on Friday saw an MP from Odisha demanding a central tag for another university in the state. This time it was for the Ravenshaw University in Cuttack.
Two days ago, Kandhamal MP Achyuta Samanta had demanded a central varsity tag for Odisha’s premier Utkal University while participating in a debate on the motion of thanks to the President’s address in Parliament.
During zero hour in Lok Sabha, Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab on Friday raised the cudgels for Ravenshaw and said that the youngest university in Odisha had a long history. “Founded in 1868, the higher education institution has been a college for 147 years and a university for 15 years. The academy has given birth to many scholars, scientists, freedom fighters and politicians. The university has 27 departments and 23 PG departments. It offers PhD, Doctor of literature or (DLitt) and undergraduate honours courses in 28 departments,” Mahtab told Parliament.
Considering its golden history and the higher education being offered in the educational institution, he urged Union Minister of Education Ramesh Pokhriyal to accord central university status to Ravenshaw.
Arguing his case, Mahtab further said that while there are multiple universities in different states, Odisha has only one central university in Koraput, which caters to the needs of students in southern parts of the state.
