Only 25K Patent Applications Filed By Indian Institutes In 10 Years: Centre
New Delhi: Indian research and technology institutes filed only about 25,000 patent applications between 2009-19. Out of this, just about one-fifth were approved, Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan informed the Parliament on Tuesday.
He said that while only 25,200 patent applications were filed during the last one decade, patents were granted in 5,089 cases.
A major chunk went to the CSIR (1,917), followed by the IITs (519), the DRDO (519) and the NITs (11). Several universities, including GB Pant University (14) and Anna University (13), were also granted patents in this period, the minister said.

According to a World Intellectual Property Indicators (WIPI) report, 50,055 applications were filed in India in 2018, a growth of 7.5 per cent over the previous year. China had a record 15 lakh applications filed during the year.
