PM Modi Hails NEP 2020 As Nation’s Intellectual Renaissance

The NEP 2020 is paving the way for a self-reliant, globally competitive nation through education and innovation, says Narendra Modi

NEW DELHI: Highlighting the historic transformation of India’s education sector in the past decade, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 as India’s intellectual renaissance, paving the way for a self-reliant, globally competitive nation through education and innovation.

“The NEP 2020 is more than a reform and is the nation’s intellectual renaissance,” Mr Modi said while sharing Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s article in a newspaper highlighting the transformation India’s education sector has undergone in the last decade.

Responding to a post by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on X, Modi said: “Union Education Minister Shri @dpradhanbjp highlights how India’s education sector has undergone a historic transformation in the last decade. NEP 2020 is more than a reform; it is India’s intellectual renaissance, paving the way for a self-reliant, globally competitive nation through education and innovation.”

Pradhan, in his article, refuted the allegations that the education system has veered off its course in the last decade and said that nothing could be further from the truth.

“The country that witnessed the monumental neglect of the education system by previous governments is deeply aware of the unpleasant truth. While nations across the world reimagined education for a rapidly evolving world, India’s educational framework remained trapped in a time capsule, with the last major policy update in 1986, which was marginally amended in 1992. This was a deliberate perpetuation of colonial mindsets accompanied by a move to insulate the country from rapid technological changes taking place in the world,” Pradhan wrote.

He pointed out that corruption and governance deficit were the defining features of the country’s educational past, and the NEP 2020 represents a decisive break from this.

NEP is not merely an education reform but the intellectual decolonisation that India had awaited for a long time, Pradhan said.
