PM Modi To Virtually Inaugurate 11 New Medical Colleges, New Campus Of Central Institute Of Classical Tamil

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to promote affordable medical education and improve health infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate 11 new government medical colleges across Tamil Nadu on January 12. The total number of seats in these colleges is 1450.

The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the new campus of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil in Chennai.

Established at an estimated cost of about Rs 4000 crore, the new medical colleges are being set up at Virudhunagar, Namakkal, The Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Thiruvallur, Nagapattinam, Dindigul, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Ramanathapuram and Krishnagiri.

The new medical colleges are being set up under the centrally-sponsored scheme of ‘Establishing of New Medical Colleges attached with existing district and referral hospital’. As per the scheme, the medical colleges are set up in districts, which do not have either a government or a private medical college.

The new campus of Central Institute of Classical Tamil has been established at a cost of Rs 24 crore. Earlier, the institute was running from a rented building. Now, it will operate from a three-storey campus, equipped with a library, an e-library, seminar halls and multimedia hall.

The institute is an autonomous organization under the Union Ministry of Education. At the institute, research for the promotion of classical Tamil is conducted. Its library has over 45,000 ancient Tamil books. The institute now aims to translate ‘Thirukkural’ in other Indian and 100 foreign languages.
