RSS Affiliated Education Body Wants UPSC Questions Drafted In Hindi

New Delhi: RSS, BJP’s ideological mentor, has suggested that UPSC should draft the question papers in Hindi and then translate them into English and other languages for the benefit of candidates across the states.

The RSS-backed education body Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas (SSUN) had argued that under the present system, the essence of the question gets lost when the question is translated from English to other languages. This puts students taking the exam in vernacular languages in a disadvantaged position.

News portal The Print in its report said that SSUN has already submitted its proposal to the Narendra Modi Government.

“If a question is in English and it is translated into Hindi and other languages, there is an increased chance of error in the questions,” the portal quoted SSUN’s head of competitive exam reforms committee Devendra Singh as saying.

“Almost 50 per cent of the words that are translated from English to Hindi are wrong because they are either loosely translated or are extremely difficult words,” he added.

For example, he said “population” in Hindi is usually translated as “jansankhya” but it was translated as “samasthi”. Likewise, “data” in English is “data” in Hindi as well, but it got wrongly translated into “dutt”.

Talking to Print, Singh cited a study which showed that only 40 out of the total number of students who wrote the last UPSC exam in Hindi and other languages qualified. He said that 90 per cent of the qualifying candidates is from English background.

SSUN had earlier also demanded the scrapping of the aptitude test in the UPSC exam as its introduction has led to a fall in the number of students appearing in Hindi and other languages.
