In a heartwarming tale of grit and determination, sanitation worker Ranu Devi has watched her daughter achieve what once seemed impossible — earning a PhD from the very campus where she spent decades mopping floors.
Ranu Devi began her journey by mopping floors on the BIT Mesra campus in Ranchi with a weekly wage of just Rs 400, according toa report in Better India.
Even after her husband’s death, she continued working tirelessly, determined to secure a better future for her three children. Today, she earns Rs 15,000 a month, but her true reward lies in her daughter’s success.
Her daughter, Aarti Kumari, grew up inspired by her mother’s relentless effort. After completing her BTech elsewhere, Aarti pursued her MTech at BIT Mesra and has now earned her PhD in engineering from the same institute; aided by scholarships that eased the family’s financial burden.
Hailing from Turup village in Jharkhand, Aarti has become the first woman from her village to achieve this milestone in engineering. For Ranu Devi, the corridors she once cleaned now symbolise her daughter’s triumph, as the campus conferred upon Aarti the title of Dr.
This success story stands as a testament to a mother’s sacrifice and the transformative power of education.
