New Delhi: The Supreme Court (SC) of India on Tuesday directed the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and University Grants Commission (UGC) to work together to make sure the career of 2 lakh students writing CBSE compartment exams does not suffer.
Approximately 2 lakh students sitting for compartment examination had requested the top court to ensure that results are declared as soon as possible so that they do not miss out on this year’s academic session admission.
Meanwhile, the UGC on Tuesday said in the Supreme Court that the cut off date for closing admissions has been finalised and is likely to be announced on Tuesday.
The bench of justices AM Khanwilkar and Sanjeev Khanna said, “Career of 2 lakh students is not a small matter. Their career will be affected for an entire year. You hold your decision on finalizing the cut off date till Thursday. Work in tandem with CBSE and work out a way by which you can accommodate these students for this year,” reported Hindustan Times.
The bench was hearing two PILs by Anika Samvedi and Shivam Kumar. The first petition asked the court to postpone the compartment exams and another plea only requested to ensure the career of students does not suffer due to the late announcement of results.
Roopesh Kumar, CBSE counsel told the SC that due to COVID-19 protocol, exams were conducted around 1278 centres, and to collect results from these centres and declare the results will take at least a month.
Apurva Kurup, UGC counsel told the bench that the admissions process generally closes by October end and compartment students get to apply for the rest of the seats that are vacant.
The bench told UGC, “This is a peculiar situation we are facing this year. You can make a one-week accommodation till the first week of November in the interest of these students.”
The top court has deferred the matter for hearing on September 24.
