NEW DELHI: The Tamil Nadu government will establish new nursing colleges in six districts, with an annual intake of 100 students each. The colleges, which will offer BSc Nursing courses, will add 600 undergraduate seats annually.
According to a government order, the six nursing colleges will be set up in Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Dharmapuri, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Tirunelveli.
Tamil Nadu Dr M G R Medical University will meet the expenditure of Rs 270.26 crore for the project.
Additionally, a seventh nursing college with an intake of 60 students will be set up at the Coimbatore Government Medical College and ESI Hospital, taking the total number of new BSc Nursing seats to 660.
The GO gives effect to Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s announcement in the Assembly to establish new nursing colleges in the six districts. The existing facilities at the respective medical colleges will be utilised to accommodate the new intake for the current academic year.
While making a statement under Rule 110 in the Assembly, Vijay had said no new government nursing colleges had been started in Tamil Nadu since 2014.
In order to produce the nursing, pharmacy and paramedical personnel required to provide quality medical services, additional student admissions would be created in government medical colleges at an estimated cost of Rs 351 crore, he had said.
“Seven new government nursing colleges will be started. As many as 660 B Sc nursing student seats will be created, and an additional 1,925 student seats will be created in existing nursing colleges and nursing schools, 2,778 student seats in 12 paramedical courses and 735 additional seats in pharmacy courses, totalling 6,098 additional seats,” the CM said in the House.
“The proposed manpower shall be engaged strictly on a temporary/contract basis and only to the extent actually required for the approved intake. No permanent posts shall be created, and no additional pensionary or other continuing liability shall accrue to government on account of such engagement,” the GO stated.

“We are pleased to inform that the government orders for the nursing courses have now been issued, and all these courses will commence from the current academic year 2026-2027. Six new government nursing colleges are being established in Namakkal, Tiruchi, Dharmapuri, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, and Tirunelveli Government Medical Colleges, each with 100 B.Sc. Nursing student admission seats. The full expenditure of Rs. 270.26 crore for this is being borne by the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University Fund,” Tamil Nadu Health Minister Dr. K. G. Arunraj said in a post on X.
Earlier this month, the state government issued a notification to fill 4,724 nursing vacancies across the state on a contractual basis. The vacancies will be filled through the National Health Mission.
