The Centre on Saturday released the ‘All India Survey On Higher Education for 2018-19:
Some of the key findings of the survey are as follows:
1. Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education has increased from 25.8 in 2017-18 to 26.3 in 2018-19, while in absolute terms the enrolment increased from 3.66 crore to 3.74 crore students.
2. The top states with the highest number of colleges are Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
3. Bengaluru has the highest number of colleges in the country at 880, followed by Jaipur with 566 colleges.
4. Across the country, there are 993 universities, 39,931 college and 10,725 stand-alone institutions.
5. In all, 385 universities fall under the private domain and 394 universities are located in rural areas.
6. There are 16 universities exclusively for women — three in Rajasthan, two in Tamil Nadu and one each in Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, Odisha, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.
7. There are 548 general universities, 142 technical universities, 63 agriculture and allied universities, 58 medical universities, 23 law universities, 13 Sanskrit universities and 9 language universities.
8. In terms of the increase in the number of universities, they have grown from 903 (2017-18) to 993 (2018-19) and total higher education institutes from 49,964 to 51,649 in the same corresponding period. The number of faculty increased from 13.88 lakhs to 14.16 lakhs.
